What to see
The village revolves around Hacienda Zuleta, a former property of the Galo Plaza Lasso family (a former president of Ecuador). The hamlet's houses feature the typical white facades of the Sierra. On the central plaza and in family workshops, women hand-embroider tablecloths, blouses and textile paintings with vibrant floral and animal motifs.
History and context
The hacienda dates back to the colonial era. In the 20th century, Galo Plaza Lasso transformed it into a model agricultural estate and introduced dairy farming practices. After his death, the family opened the domain to agritourism while maintaining cheese production. The embroidery tradition, meanwhile, predates the republican period and remains a strong cultural marker of the community today.
Highlights of your visit
Artisanal embroidery
Family workshops allow you to observe needlework in real time. Each piece takes days, sometimes weeks. The motifs — birds, flowers, rural scenes — are transmitted orally among community women. Buying directly from the artisans supports the local economy.
The condor conservation project
The hacienda participates in an Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) reintroduction program. Guided visits allow you to observe birds in semi-freedom within their rehabilitation enclosure before release. It's one of the rare opportunities to see this species up close in Ecuador.
The cheese dairy and agriculture
The estate produces artisanal cheeses from milk sourced from its own herds. A visit to the cheese dairy illustrates the continuity between colonial tradition and contemporary production. Tastings on-site are available.
Photography tips
Morning light is ideal for photographing embroideries — colors stand out best in diffuse natural light. For condors, a telephoto lens is useful. Always ask permission before photographing artisans at work.
