Puerto Villamil

Puerto Villamil

·

On Isabela's southern coast, Puerto Villamil preserves the soul of a tropical fishing port—an ideal base for exploring the Galápagos volcanoes and lagoons.

Capital of Galápagos Province, Puerto Villamil is essential when visiting these spectacular islands of Équateur. Yet beyond being an obligatory stop in the archipelago, it stands as a destination in its own right. Numerous fascinating attractions await discovery in the town and its surroundings.

History

Puerto Villamil is home to the vast majority of inhabitants on Isabela, the archipelago's largest island. The town was founded in the 19th century by Ecuadorian settlers and retains the charm of a traditional fishing port, complete with striking tropical imagery and a laid-back atmosphere. The locality only began transforming into a tourist destination proper in 1996, when it welcomed a small airstrip connected to other islands' runways.

What to Discover in Puerto Villamil?

Puerto Villamil Beach

The long beach at Puerto Villamil, formed from white coral sand, invites diverse activities. Beyond relaxation, you can swim and surf. Given its proximity to town, numerous bars dot the shoreline—perfect for sipping cocktails while watching the sunset. At the beach's far end lies a saltwater lagoon harboring a colony of marine iguanas and Galápagos flamingos, adding a wild dimension to this stunning locale.

Puerto Villamil Port

Puerto Villamil's port merits a visit as well. Sea lions laze in the sun here, and you can rent snorkeling gear from your hotel to swim alongside these captivating animals. You'll also appreciate encounters with penguins—marine birds inhabiting the cool waters around the port's rocky outcrops.

Las Tintoras

Just hundreds of meters offshore, Las Tintoras comprises a cluster of small islets serving as wildlife refuge. They offer a breathtaking vantage point for spotting sharks near the surface at low tide. Hosting distinctive species, the Tintoras network also forms an exceptional snorkeling spot during certain periods. Tourists can encounter marine iguanas and Galápagos sea lions here.

Playa de Amor

Playa de Amor, nestled along Puerto Villamil's western coast, is a small beach with volcanic shores accessible by bike or taxi. It's a sanctuary of calm where you can swim in crystalline waters alongside marine iguanas and occasionally sea turtles. The beach's tranquility—often nearly empty—adds to its appeal.

La Playita

La Playita offers a unique opportunity to relax and cool off in the company of sea lions. Whitetip reef sharks can often be spotted offshore.

El Muro de Lágrimas

El Muro de las Lágrimas, or "The Wall of Tears," is an intriguing site 6 km from Puerto Villamil. This imposing 25-meter-high wall, erected by prisoners of the island's former penal colony, stands as a poignant testament to the cruel treatment these inmates endured during their imprisonment. Thousands perished during its construction—a wall that ultimately proved purposeless.

The monument is accessible by bike and taxi. While visiting, watch for lava lizards camouflaged among the brown, arid rocks of the surrounding landscape.

Humedales

Near the Iguana Crossing hotel at the beach's far end, a trail winds through a wetland zone locally called "Humedales," awaiting visitors. Here, mineral-tinted waters attract flamingos and pintail ducks. Further along, diverse mangrove species and Opuntia cacti enchant walkers. Birdwatching enthusiasts should remain alert—this is the only place on earth where the mangrove finch, a critically endangered species, can be observed.

Arnaldo Tupiza Tortoise Breeding Center

Beyond the Humedales, the trail continues through prickly pear cactus groves until reaching a facility devoted to breeding giant tortoises: the Arnaldo Tupiza Tortoise Breeding Center. Here you'll observe two tortoise species native to Isabela, along with a nursery safeguarding hatchlings. Young tortoises remain protected until they reach sufficient size and strength to survive natural predators (dogs, feral goats, etc.) in the wild.

Sierra Negra

With a crater 9 km in diameter—the world's second-largest—Sierra Negra is undoubtedly the Galápagos' most impressive volcano. Reaching its summit requires considerable logistical effort. First comes a 45-minute drive from Villamil to the trailhead, followed by approximately 2 hours of hiking. Yet the ascent rewards handsomely. Breathtaking panoramas of Isabela's other volcanoes unfold before you, with views extending even to Fernandina Island.

Alternatively, you can summit Sierra Negra via recent lava flows released by Chico volcano in 1975.
