On the southern coast of San Cristóbal, La Lobería stretches 2.5 km of coral sand where sea lions, marine iguanas and surfers share the bay.

La Lobería is a magnificent beach on San Cristóbal, an island in the Galápagos archipelago. This 2.5 km coastal stretch is an excellent place to observe sea lions, who love to bask here. But observing these animals is not the only activity it offers. This section of the island's shoreline is also ideal for snorkeling and surfing.

A few words about this beach

La Lobería is nestled south of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the capital of the Galápagos province in Équateur, and about ten minutes from the island's airport. It is made up of coral sand and sits sheltered in a bay bearing its name, which is also protected by rocks.

This stretch of San Cristóbal's coast lies near the Puntilla de Santa Elena Coastal Marine Fauna Production Reserve. Although it is not part of this reserve, it benefits from strong protection due to its significant wildlife importance.

La Lobería is best known for its sea lion colony, to which it also owes its name. Indeed, its name refers to the large number of sea lions it once housed. Approximately 1,300 individuals of these animals populated this beach. However, 20 years ago, most of them decided to migrate to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. The reason for their departure remains a mystery.

La Lobería, along with Mann Beach and the Gianni Arismendy Interpretation Center, are some of the attractions you can visit on foot from the city's port. Note that another beach with the same name exists in the archipelago. However, this one is located on Floreana Island.

What to do on this beach?

Observe the sea lions

When you arrive on the beach, you will certainly be delighted to see its sea lion colonies. However, be cautious during your observations, as these animals can become aggressive when an intruder enters their territory. It is advisable to maintain a minimum distance of two meters.

From a social perspective, sea lions gather in colonies. Each group consists of one dominant male and about thirty females, each accompanied by her offspring. The males are easily distinguishable. They have a protuberance on their head and are generally larger than females. They also spend most of their time defending their territories by producing a series of sounds and movements.

Admire other beach animals

Sea lions are not the only animals inhabiting the bay. You will also spot birds such as frigatebirds, Galápagos penguins and many finch species. The rocks, meanwhile, are the kingdom of Galápagos marine iguanas, a species endemic to the region.

Discover the local flora

On the natural trail leading to the beach, you will have the opportunity to discover a wide variety of mangroves and other plant species, as well as marine and terrestrial birds. Among the plants you will encounter are button mangrove, white mangrove, tiquilia and cotonéaster. You will also see other species from the coastal zone, such as "cacho de chivo".

Enjoy water activities

In the calm waters of the bay, you can explore its marine creatures by snorkeling. Outside the bay, you will find waves high enough for surfing.

La Lobería is located 30 minutes' walk from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. Head along Avenida Alsacio Northia toward the airport. You can also get there by car or bicycle. Travel times are respectively 7 minutes and 15 minutes. Park your vehicle at the trailhead. You then walk for 10 minutes along the pedestrian path to reach the beach.
