What you'll see
The main beach offers a crescent of white sand bordered by ochre cliffs and dense vegetation. The access trail crosses three distinct ecosystems: dry forest, transitional humid forest and rocky coastline. Along the way, viewpoints over the Pacific Ocean and isolated coves regularly open up. Frigatebirds, pelicans and boobies are frequently observable.
History and context
The beach is part of the Machalilla National Park, established in 1979 — Équateur's only coastal national park. It protects fragments of tropical dry forest, coral reefs and Isla de la Plata, sometimes nicknamed the "poor man's Galápagos" for its bird life. Los Frailes owes its name to the silhouette of rocks that evoke monks in robes.
Highlights of the visit
The panoramic trail
Before reaching the beach, the trail climbs the cliffs and offers sweeping coastal views. This is where vegetation diversity is most visible: columnar cacti, ceibos and strangler figs coexist over a few hundred meters.
The main beach
Wide and uncrowded on weekdays, it allows peaceful swimming in generally calm water. The absence of street vendors and amplified music heightens the sense of solitude.
Secondary coves
Continuing the trail beyond the main beach, you reach rocky inlets accessible at low tide. These areas shelter sea urchins, starfish and occasionally sea turtles.
Bird watching
The sight of magnificent frigatebirds and brown pelicans is almost constant. Between June and September, humpback whale migration season coincides with visits — specimens are sometimes visible from the cliffs.
Photography tips
Morning light (before 10am) is ideal: the sun illuminates the cliffs without backlighting. From the trail's viewpoints, a wide-angle lens captures the complete curve of the bay. In late afternoon, grazing light gilds the sand and rocks. Drones are subject to national park regulations — check with the gate post upon arrival.
Location and access
Los Frailes is located in Manabí province, approximately 12 km north of Puerto López via the coastal road E15. From Puerto López, taxis and local buses serve the park entrance. There is no direct transport to the beach: a hiking trail of approximately 2 km connects the parking area to the beach. Puerto López is accessible from Manta (approximately 2 hours) or from Guayaquil (approximately 4 hours).
