Puerto López
Puerto López
An Ecuadorian fishing port on the Ruta del Spondylus, Puerto López is the ideal base for observing humpback whales and exploring Isla de la Plata.
Puerto López is the gateway to Machalilla National Park, an important biodiversity reserve. This coastal town, nestled in a natural bay, is also the departure point for excursions to Isla de la Plata, nicknamed the poor man's Galápagos for its remarkable animal species found on that archipelago. Yet Puerto López is far more than a simple stopover to explore the region's popular attractions—it's a genuine destination in its own right. You'll surely delight in strolling its waterfront and pier, and witnessing the humpback whales that grace its waters.
History of this corner of Manabí Province
Puerto López is the capital of the canton of the same name, located in Manabí Province on Ecuador's west coast. The area surrounding the town was once home to several civilizations, including the Machalilla, Valdivia Chorrera, and Bahia cultures. Traces of these societies, which flourished between 3,500 BC and 700 AD, have been discovered within its expansive natural harbor.
This bay was colonized by Spaniard José González and Chilean Juan Carpite around 1810. Rich in fish, the region attracted fishermen from Palmar, Santa Elena Province, around 1820. These fishermen stayed only briefly. Permanent human settlement of Puerto López began in 1940.
According to the 2022 census, the town had 12,598 inhabitants. Fishing plays an important role in its economy, followed by commerce and ecotourism.
What to do in Puerto López?
Stroll the Malecón of Puerto López
The Malecón of Puerto López is a lively waterfront promenade that runs along the town's beach. Offering stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, it's the perfect spot for a walk, bike ride, or simply to relax while taking in the maritime scenery. Along this promenade you'll find a variety of restaurants, bars, and boutiques offering local specialties and souvenirs. As night falls, the Malecón comes alive with music from local artists.
Visit Puerto López Pier
Puerto López Pier, inaugurated in 2013, primarily serves as a departure point for whale-watching excursions. It's therefore essential if you wish to see these majestic marine mammals in the region. However, even if whale watching isn't your main interest, the pier is worth a visit just to admire the boats moored nearby.
Observe whales
Puerto López is an excellent location for whale watching in Ecuador. More than 100,000 foreign and local tourists flock here annually for this experience.
Humpback whales gather in this part of the Pacific Ocean from mid-June to October to mate. Your chances of spotting them are excellent during this season. They're often found behind Isla de Salango.
Enjoy Los Frailes Beach
Part of Machalilla National Park, Los Frailes Beach is located north of Puerto López. It's considered one of Ecuador's most beautiful beaches. This wild stretch of coastline is open Tuesday through Sunday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Within the Los Frailes Beach area, there's also a hiking trail that lets you explore other beaches, including Playita Negra, a black sand beach, and La Tortuguita beach, as well as a scenic viewpoint.
Discover the region's ancient cultures
Just 12 kilometers from Puerto López lies the archaeological site of Agua Blanca. A museum there houses fascinating artifacts from the Manteña and Machalilla cultures.
Visiting this site is also an opportunity to see its natural sulfur lagoon, known for its medicinal properties. You can bathe in it and coat yourself with the healing mud that lines its shores. Note, however, that the water and mud emit an unpleasant odor due to the sulfur content.
Visit Isla de la Plata
Isla de la Plata, covering 5.9 square kilometers, is located 40 kilometers offshore from Puerto López. Some of its animal species are well-known inhabitants of the Galápagos, such as blue-footed boobies, red-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, frigatebirds, pelicans, albatrosses, and more. Gathering in colonies, these seabirds offer visitors a spectacular display. The waters surrounding the island also harbor remarkable marine fauna that will interest snorkeling enthusiasts. As a bonus, during the crossing to the island, you may have the chance to observe dolphins playing in the waves, adding a touch of magic to the excursion.
Puerto López is accessible only by land. You can reach it by bus or car from Guayaquil (approximately 218 kilometers to the southeast), Manta (approximately 84 kilometers to the north), and even Quito (approximately 469 kilometers to the northeast). Keep in mind, however, that traveling from the capital is lengthy (approximately 9 hours).
If departing from distant cities like Quito, an alternative to shorten your journey is to fly to Manta or Portoviejo, then take a bus to Puerto López.
Best time to explore this part of Ecuador
The ideal period to visit Puerto López is during the dry season, from June to October. These months offer pleasant weather for enjoying the beaches and outdoor activities. Additionally, this is also the breeding season for humpback whales.
