Puerto Ayora
On the southern coast of Santa Cruz, Puerto Ayora is the most vibrant gateway to the Galápagos: giant tortoises, turquoise beaches, and wildlife found nowhere else on Earth.
Puerto Ayora, also known as Puerto Isidro Ayora, is a coastal town on the southern shore of Santa Cruz Island, at the heart of the Galápagos archipelago. It is both the largest and most developed city in this remote Ecuadorian province, isolated in the middle of the ocean.
Puerto Ayora, the Beating Heart of the Galápagos
Puerto Ayora is home to 12,696 residents. Though not the administrative capital of the archipelago, it is unmistakably its nerve centre. The two largest banks in the Galápagos are located here. Beyond finance, the town boasts multiple healthcare facilities, a desalination plant, and a sports complex. Its downtown core pulses with a compact collection of hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, souvenir shops, clothing stores, seafood markets, tourist boutiques, and nightclubs.
Puerto Ayora also anchors the Galápagos' conservation efforts. It houses both the Charles Darwin Foundation and the administrative headquarters of the Galápagos National Park, which encompasses 97% of the archipelago's total land area.
Things to Do in Puerto Isidro Ayora
Visit the Charles Darwin Research Station
The Charles Darwin Research Station stands as a cornerstone institution in preserving the Galápagos ecosystem since the islands' designation as a national park. During your visit, you'll witness giant tortoises at various stages of development. Working closely with the national park, the station operates a captive-breeding programme for these creatures, reintroducing them to their natural habitat only once they've grown large enough to fend off predators.
Experience Local Life at the Town's Fish Market
Along Charles Darwin Avenue, just steps from the water's edge, lies the town's fish market—a window into authentic island life. Fishermen land their fresh catches throughout the day, creating a scene where locals mingle with unexpected visitors: pelicans and sea lions, drawn by scraps offered by enterprising fishermen. It's a spectacle well worth capturing on film.
Unwind at Tortugas Bay
Stretching across a band of white sand and embraced by turquoise waters, Tortugas Bay ranks among the Galápagos' finest beaches. It's the perfect setting for a half-day or full-day escape, located just off Puerto Ayora's southwestern edge.
The beach divides into two distinct sections: Playa Brava and Playa Mansa. The former, marked by strong currents, attracts seasoned surfers and swimmers. The latter, smaller and more sheltered, is beloved by snorkellers and kayakers. Both areas teem with life—iguanas, sea turtles, and white-tipped reef sharks glide beneath the surface, while seabirds grace the nearby mangroves.
Explore Santa Cruz's Verdant Highlands
From Puerto Ayora, the lush highlands of Santa Cruz are easily within reach via taxi or private vehicle. Two attractions stand out in this part of the island: Los Gemelos and the El Chato giant tortoise reserve.
Los Gemelos is a striking geological site formed by two sinkholes created when an empty magma chamber collapsed. The twin depressions offer vistas that seem plucked from Jurassic Park itself. Self-guided trails wind through a Scalesia forest canopy, offering chances to spot the terrestrial species that call this island home.
Nestled near Los Gemelos is a private reserve harboring giant tortoises—an excellent spot to observe these majestic reptiles in their natural surroundings.
Swim or Snorkel at Las Grietas
Las Grietas stands as one of Santa Cruz Island's most iconic geological formations. These deep lava crevasses shelter pristine natural pools of crystalline, deep-blue water fed by underground springs, which then blend with the sea.
Access comes via a trail crossing rocky, arid terrain. Once there, visitors can plunge into the cool, clear waters of these natural fissures. The experience also opens doors to snorkelling, allowing you to discover the modest array of marine species that have made these waters home.
