Las Grietas

Three natural pools nestled between towering lava walls: Las Grietas is the unmissable refreshing escape from Puerto Ayora on the island of Santa Cruz.

Counted among the most emblematic geological formations on the island of Santa Cruz in the Galápagos archipelago, Las Grietas is a series of impressive volcanic crevasses sheltering magnificent pools. It's a highly prized spot for cooling off or snorkeling. The attraction is located west of Bahía Academia, not far from the town of Puerto Ayora.

Las Grietas, an Extraordinary Swimming Destination

Las Grietas was formed by lava fissures. The site comprises 3 pools, fed by both an underground river and the sea. Because of this mix of fresh and saltwater, the likelihood of large animals visiting is extremely low. Thus, visitors can relax or swim without fear of encountering a seal or shark.

The pools are generally calm. This makes them a highly prized swimming spot for both locals and tourists. They can extend up to 100 meters in length and 7 meters in width. Their maximum depth is approximately 10 meters. Crystal-clear, these pools are ideal for snorkeling. However, few marine creatures have made their home here.

Most tourists prefer to stay in the first pool at the site, which often makes it very crowded. Indeed, to access the second pool, you must swim to the far end of the first pool and climb over the rocks.

Access to the third pool is even more challenging. The swimmer must reach the end of the second pool and locate a hole approximately 1 meter below the water surface in the wall on the right side. By passing through this tunnel, which is just over a meter long while holding your breath, the diver will emerge directly into the last pool, which is more peaceful. It thus allows you to enjoy a serene atmosphere, away from the crowds. In the shadow of the towering lava walls, its waters are cool and more pleasant during the warm months.

Practical Information

Opening Hours and Entrance Fees

Las Grietas is open from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM. The entrance fee is $10 per person. Once upon a time, it was possible to visit the site on your own. Today, a guide from the Galápagos National Park is mandatory.

When to Visit?

This attraction can be visited at any time of year. The pools register temperatures of 18–20°C and lower water levels during the dry season (June to December). They display temperatures of 24–29°C and higher water levels during the period from January to May.

The pools are most pleasant in the middle of the day. However, given their great popularity, it is recommended to avoid weekends and to visit early in the morning or late in the day to encounter fewer tourists.

To reach Las Grietas, first head to the municipal pier in Puerto Ayora, where you'll find regular water taxis that will take you across the bay. The crossing costs only $0.50 per person. Ask the driver to drop you off at Finch Bay.

Once on land, follow the signs indicating Finch Bay Hotel. When you've reached the hotel, take the trail that leads to Las Grietas. This short hike will take you through various terrains, ranging from beach to lava field, passing through a forest of cacti. You'll have the opportunity to admire the pink and salty waters of the wetland areas. You may also spot many birds along the way. These include finches, flycatchers, woodpeckers, falcons, marsh owls, brown pelicans and lizards.

In total, the walk lasts between 15 to 20 minutes, depending on your pace. As you approach the crevasses, you'll find wooden steps leading directly down to the waters of the first pool.

Although the trail is not difficult, it is recommended to wear closed-toe sneakers during the hike. Furthermore, if you plan to go snorkeling, bring your own equipment. However, you can also rent gear in Puerto Ayora.
