Cosanga
A small Andean village at the edge of the Amazon, Cosanga is home to over 580 bird species and offers a rare playground for ecotourism enthusiasts.
Located in the Napo region, the town of Cosanga sits approximately 47 km from Tena, Napo's capital, and 83 km southeast of Quito, Ecuador's capital. With countless bird species inhabiting the region, Cosanga has become one of Ecuador's most compelling tourist destinations. Both domestic and international travelers come to explore the local biodiversity and participate in bird counts.
Discovering Cosanga
Cosanga is a parish town. In Ecuador, the term parish refers to a municipal administrative district. The country indeed has both urban and rural parishes.
The region's economy relies heavily on orchid cultivation and livestock farming. More than 70% of residents' income comes from cattle ranching, with the remaining 30% divided between tourism and agriculture.
Cosanga is an Ecuadorian biodiversity sanctuary. In this region, natural diversity represents one of the country's most significant attractions. It harbors large mammals such as mountain tapirs, bears, and cougars. It is equally one of the world's greatest hotspots for bird watching. More than 580 bird species reside in this area.
In 2012, the Ministry of Tourism organized a special initiative to mobilize Ecuadorians to protect local bird species: the "2012 Christmas Bird Count." Given the remarkable number of species documented, the town received recognition: "Cosanga – Narupa, the world's premier birdwatching destination."
Surrounding Cosanga are several sites designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites, the nearest being Sangay National Park, located 51 km to the northeast. By renting a bicycle, you can also enjoy a night hike or an archaeological excursion. Additionally, the Antisana Ecological Reserve is just 4 km from town, and the Bosque Sumaco forest is merely 1.5 km away.
Designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Sumaco National Park is dedicated to preserving endemic species. Located in Napo Province, it spans approximately 2,052.49 km. It also stands out for Sumac Volcano, a gem rising to 3,732 meters in elevation.
Climate
Reaching 6,807 meters in altitude, the Cosanga region experiences, according to the Köppen-Geiger climate classification, warm and temperate conditions with very heavy rainfall. During the year's driest months—particularly January—it records an average precipitation of 135 mm. How do you get there?
Due to roads in poor condition, it is most practical to rent a four-wheel-drive vehicle to reach the Cosanga region. From Quito, the most accessible and shortest route spans approximately 124 km, with travel time reaching up to 2 hours and 15 minutes. The Cosanga parish is just 30 minutes from Baeza.
