Machala

·

The world's banana capital and gateway to El Oro province, Machala reveals an authentic Ecuadorian coast, where a bustling port, Jambelí Island, and gold-mining Andean villages converge.

Machala is the capital of El Oro province in southwestern Ecuador. Dubbed the "world's banana capital," thousands of square kilometers of banana plantations stretch across its surroundings. Bananas are exported to numerous countries through its port, Puerto Bolívar. Yet despite this great renown, the city holds modest appeal from a tourism standpoint and often serves as a stepping stone to other attractions across the country. That said, it certainly has the power to captivate certain travelers.

History

Unlike other major cities in Ecuador, Machala was not founded by the Spanish. A village of the Machala people already existed near the present-day city in 1537, when Spanish explorers first arrived in the region.

In 1820, Machala joined Guayaquil's independence cause and later that of Ecuador itself. In 1824, during the Battle of Pichincha, its inhabitants joined Marshal Sucre's troops to defeat the Spanish. That same year, the city became a canton of the Guayaquil department, and consequently part of Gran Colombia. In 1941, during the war between Ecuador and Peru, it was briefly occupied by enemy forces.

Machala's commercial boom began in the 1940s. In 1998, thanks to the peace treaty between Ecuador and Peru, the city became the principal trading point between the two nations.

Machala Today

Machala is now a major commercial hub of Ecuador. Beyond the banana industry, its economy relies on other agricultural products such as cacao, coffee, and aquaculture. It is the country's fifth-largest city, with a population of 241,606 as of 2010.
