A pristine coral reef discovered off the Galápagos Islands? This is excellent news for biodiversity and science! Indeed, these corals will serve to rehabilitate marine biodiversity, to understand the history of the archipelago, as well as to restore damaged reefs… Want to learn more? Board the submersible Alvin and discover the information revealed by members of the Galapagos Deep 2023 expedition, which made this discovery in April 2023.

The treasures of this discovery: a living coral reef

Located in the northeastern South Pacific Ocean, the Galápagos Islands are renowned for their submarine geomorphology and "life-filled" biodiversity, as UNESCO highlights.

To this exceptional world heritage is now added a pristine coral reef composed of approximately 50% living corals—where most reefs contain less than 30% in their skeleton! Octopuses, lobsters, sharks, rays, and bat fish have also been observed on this pristine reef, which is thousands of years old…

Stretching about two kilometers, this natural treasure is found between 400 and 600 meters deep, on the slopes of an underwater volcano, off the Galápagos Marine Reserve. This is a rare discovery, as few coral reefs "so extensive and developed at this depth" have been found, according to one of the expedition's researchers.

Galapagos Deep 2023: the expedition behind this discovery

This "site of global importance" is a discovery of Galapagos Deep 2023. It is an expedition guided and driven by several objectives:

  • gather data and samples;

  • study the ocean and climate to help preserve the Galapagos seafloor;

  • clarify the geological formation of the archipelago;

  • communicate about the natural history of the archipelago.

Composed of "scientists, explorers, observers, submersible technicians, and ship crews,"1 the Galapagos Deep 2023 team embarked for four weeks aboard the submersible Alvin (known for having explored the Titanic). Now, thanks to this discovery, a study can be conducted on the reef. This will allow, for example, learning more about the ocean waters of the Galápagos archipelago islands.

The importance of coral reefs

Corals are extremely important. According to Coral Guardian, even though they occupy less than 0.2% of the seafloor, they are associated with the life of millions of plant and animal species (they host more than 25% of marine species!).

The importance of corals in our lives

Coral reefs play a crucial role in several areas. They notably serve to protect coastlines (by forming barriers) and are an important source of protein, as many fish come from coral reefs. They also have significant economic and tourism importance. They are particularly popular in exotic countries, where divers from around the world come to admire their beauty, etc.

One last point, less well known: corals also have great importance for medicine and the medical future. How? Thanks to their skeletons! While these have been used since 1970 for bone grafts, they have proven to be "a promising avenue for bone regeneration"…

The importance of the pristine coral reef of the Galápagos Islands

By its size and purity, the coral reef discovered in April 2023 off the Galápagos Islands is a promising site for biodiversity conservation. Indeed, researchers hope to be able to protect endangered species, but also to restore other damaged reefs!

Frequently asked questions

The pristine coral reef discovered in April 2023 is located between 400 and 600 meters deep, on the slopes of an underwater volcano, off the Galápagos Marine Reserve, in the northeast of the South Pacific Ocean.

This reef extends approximately two kilometers. It is distinguished by its exceptional wealth: about 50% of its corals are alive, compared to less than 30% for most coral reefs in the world.

The discovery was made by the Galapagos Deep 2023 expedition, a team composed of scientists, explorers, observers, submersible technicians, and crew members. They used the submersible Alvin, famous for having also explored the wreck of the Titanic.

Members of the Galapagos Deep 2023 expedition observed on this reef octopuses, lobsters, sharks, rays, and bat fish, among other marine species.

This pristine reef offers hope for protecting endangered species and could serve as a basis for restoring other damaged coral reefs worldwide. Its size and exceptional state of conservation make it a site of global scientific importance.

The Galápagos Marine Reserve, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is accessible to divers and travelers as part of regulated tour circuits. Diving expeditions allow exploration of its exceptional marine biodiversity, although deep-water areas like the reef discovered in 2023 remain reserved for scientific research.
